研究成果の概要

熱帯域における湿潤対流を駆動源とした成層圏-対流圏結合変動について、現象の記述と力学過程の理解から最先端モデルによる将来予測までの総合的研究を推進した。成層圏準2年周期振動(QBO)の位相によって対流圏の積雲対流の強度が変動しうること、またQBOが北半球夏季季節内振動の強さに影響を及ぼすことを明らかにした。さらに、冬季の成層圏突然昇温現象(SSW)が熱帯対流圏の対流活動および熱帯低気圧の発生頻度に影響を及ぼすことを明らかにした。

研究成果の学術的意義や社会的意義

成層圏は高度10km以上にあるため、人間活動に直接影響が無いように思われがちであるが、力学的に対流圏と結合している。従って、成層圏と対流圏の結合変動を解明することは学術的意義だけではなく社会的意義もあることである。本研究では、準2年周期振動および成層圏突然昇温現象と呼ばれる成層圏の顕著な変動が対流圏の積雲対流等に影響を与えることを明らかにした。このことは、将来の気候予測精度の向上等にも寄与しうる重要な成果である。
