研究実績の概要 |
Progress was hampered by the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the practicalities of travel for research and conferences and face-to-face meetings. It was further complicated by the need to finalise urgently by October 2022 a multi-country collaborative project funding through the EU’s Erasmus+ program, but which has also been much disrupted by the pandemic. That distraction stalled progress of this KAKEN project for some months. Later in AY2022 I was able to progress desk-based research on the most recent developments in international higher education market as it emerges from the pandemic-induced border closures, and contemporary debates over the future of the university campus in this digital age of Ai and virtual delivery of content.

理由
As reported previously, the COVID-19 pandemic and the related closure of national borders, stopping international student mobility, brought made all too salient key issues that this project set to explore: the international marketisation of higher education and the future of the campus in a virtual age. The consequences have been still unfolding over the last year and so the project has remained in an active research phase, rather than dissemination of results as initially anticipated. Research progress in the last year was somewhat hampered by the need to progress another major collaborative project, that was to have culminated after this finished, and a family imperative.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The severe increase in the costs of international travel limits the potential for presenting papers to disseminate research findings in the coming year. I have submitted a paper proposal to the International Place Branding Association, on the university campus in place branding, for the 2023 conference in Sweden. Dissemination efforts till take the form of writing for submission directly to relevant academic outlets, while continuing active research. Issues at the heart of this research project are evolving rapidly in real time. While this means the project defies the usual sequential research logics of data collection, analysis, writing and dissemination, it confirms the currency and importance of the topic.
