研究成果の概要

対流圏と海洋間の相互作用現象であるエルニーニョ・南方振動(ENSO)が、高度100kmから1000kmの超高層大気領域にまで影響を及ぼしていることが長期間の衛星観測から見出され、重要な関心を呼ぶ研究テーマである。本研究はそのテリコネクションのメカニズムを解明する。ENSO期間中降雨による水蒸気変化に伴う放射熱と潜熱変動を数値シミュレーションで定量化し、大気潮汐波を変動させる原因を明らかにした。エルニーニョ気候変動における海面から超高層までの結合過程が明らかになり、電離圏の宇宙天気予測の向上と大気上下結合研究全体の新しい展開が期待される。

研究成果の学術的意義や社会的意義

本国際共同研究では、世界に先駆けて、ENSOによる超高層大気変動の生成機構の解明を目指している。最先端大気モデルを駆使した数値シミュレーションによって、まだ研究が行われてないENSOに伴う電離圏熱圏変動観測のギャップを埋め、上下大気結合力学過程が明らかになるものと期待される。本研究により大気中の結合過程の全球描像を得ることで、この地球環境研究における新しい分野の構築と発展を促し、その成果は宇宙天気予測の向上に繋がればと考えている。
