研究成果の概要

地球規模で観測した大気中におけるCO2濃度および O2濃度の経年変化データを基に、人為起源CO2放出量のデータを利用して、2001年から2020年までの人為起源CO2の大気残留率と海洋および陸上生物圏への吸収割合を求めたところ、それぞれ44±0.3％、33±6％、23±6％であった。一方、それとは独立にCO2濃度とその炭素同位体比の観測データから求めた海洋および陸上生物圏への吸収割合が、前者から求めた結果と誤差の範囲内で一致することが確認された。陸上生物圏への吸収量はエルニーニョ現象によって大きく年々変動をすることが分かった。

研究成果の学術的意義や社会的意義

化石燃料消費によって大気に大量に放出された二酸化炭素が海洋と陸上植物によってどのくらい吸収され、大気にどのくらい在留するかを正確に求めることは、今後の地球温暖化予測にとって重要な課題である。本研究ではそれらをCO2濃度とO2濃度観測から求める方法と、CO2濃度とその炭素同位体から求める方法を用いて解析したが、２つの独立した手法から得られた結果が誤差の範囲で一致したことから、信頼性が高い結果が得られたと結論づけられる。
