研究開始時の研究の概要 |
I am researching the influence of Eastern religion on British literature, focusing on Iris Murdoch, Lawrence Durrell and Ted Hughes. Exploring this influence will lead both to a richer understanding of their work, and to an understanding of the complex dialectic between Eastern and Western thought.

研究実績の概要 |
During this year I completed three book chapters on the Kakenhi topic for publication. All of them deal with the influence of Japanese, Shinto and/or Buddhistic themes on works by British authors. They are all due to be published in 2022. 1)‘The aesthetics of perfection and imperfection in Iris Murdoch's An Accidental Man' 2)‘Iris Murdoch and The Tale of Genji ' 3)‘The Road from Colonus’: re-membering, dismembering and cosmic hospitality'
I also participated in two online conferences during this period, though these were only tangentially related to the research project.

理由
My research agenda was delayed due to the cancelling of conferences due to the pandemic. During the period April 2021 to March 2022, I have not been able to travel abroad to conduct research due to the Covid-19 restrictions. However, I have continued work on the research topic by writing book chapters and attending online conferences.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This year I plan to make two presentations on Buddhism in the works of Lawrence Durrell.
‘Angkor Wat and Mount Vulture: Durrell's Hidden Sacred Heterotopias', at the virtual conference at the International Lawrence Durrell Society On Miracle Ground XXI: Mysticisms, Heresies and Heterotopias in the Works of Lawrence Durrell, 9th-11th June, 2022. ‘Buddhism in the Work of Lawrence Durrell' at the 10th International Conference on Asian Studies 2022 (asianstudy.info, Bali, Indonesia from 20th-21st October, 2022. (It is not yet clear whether this will be virtual or face-to-face.)
These presentations will form the basis of an article on Durrell and Buddhism which I intend to publish in the Deus Loci, the journal of the International Lawrence Durrell Society.
