研究開始時の研究の概要 |
My proposed project investigates why Japanese youth do not participate in politics whereas British youth are re-engaging with politics. I investigate through in-depth interviews and an opinion survey.
|
研究実績の概要 |
During the first year of this project, the project proceeded according to schedule and initial, tentative findings were reached. In-depth interviews were conducted in Japan and in the UK. Moreover, transcripts of those interviews were completed and initial analysis was begun. The research output included a conference presentation and a short magazine article on young people's participation. The interviews from the first year were intended to be the first wave of a panel study and we were to conduct the second wave of interviews at the end of last year. Unfortunately the project has been delayed by the COVID pandemic as we are not able to conduct the second wave of our panel study. In 2020, the project conducted an internet-based public opinion survey of young people's values. Research achievements are close to zero, considerably below the level intended for this project due to the delays in being able to conduct the second wave of the in-depth interviews. We will continue with the interviews as soon as it is safe to do so and hope to continue with presenting the findings at international conferences and publishing in journals. Particularly during the pandemic, assessing young people's attitudes and values toward the government and its policies is crucial, so these will be included in future research.

理由
Unfortunately the project has been delayed by the COVID pandemic as we are not able to conduct the second wave of our panel study. We concluded the first wave of the interviews as planned during the first year of the project. Due to the COVID pandemic, we have not been able to continue with the interviews that are integral to the project. To conduct the interviews, international travel and travel within Japan is necessary. The states of emergency in Japan and the lock-down in the UK prevented the interview team from doing so. Even when the state of emergency and lockdown are over, fears for safety of the interviewers and interviewees mean that we may continue to delay the interviews. These concerns may lead to a revised research design that cuts travel and face-to-face contact with interviewees.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Completing the second wave of the in-depth interviews depends on the vaccine rate and the trajectory of the pandemic, so it is not possible to set a concrete schedule at this point in time. I hope to be able to continue with the interviews as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, I hope to produce a documentary about young people's attitudes toward the general election that will likely be held in the fall of 2021 if it can be filmed safely. Particularly during the pandemic, assessing young people's attitudes and values toward the government and its policies is crucial, so these will be included in future research. Summary of plans for the research scheme: 2021-2022: analyze public opinion surveys; produce a documentary on young people and the general election; initial plans to conduct a conjoint survey experiemnt.
