Throughout the research period, I focused on the impacts of COVID-19 on study abroad students' perceptions, presenting these findings at the AAAL conference. My presentation explored how the pandemic affected students’ views on educational and cultural engagements. Additionally, I published a paper in the "Review of Cognitive Linguistics" on metaphorical idioms in educational settings, examining study design and validity concerns. While broader in scope, this paper relates to the richness of linguistic interactions in study abroad environments. The primary findings of my study revealed that while the overall impact of COVID-19 on study abroad experiences was negative, there were some unexpected positive outcomes. Students who stayed in homestays reported an improvement in the quality of their experience, often mentioning perceived enhancements in their language development and the development of closer relationships with their host families. Another significant finding was the strong preference among students for a strict classroom policy that mandates keeping cameras on during real-time online classes. This, they felt, enhanced their engagement and connection with both instructors and peers. Based on these findings, it is recommended that study abroad programs prioritize quality homestay options over dormitory placements during pandemics to provide a more supportive environment. Additionally, language programs should implement policies requiring students to turn on their web cameras during online lessons to foster better engagement and connection.
