研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The present study focuses on social aspects of language learning. The results will contribute to a better understanding of interactions during group work tasks and the relational work between single group members, and improve the implementation of group work sessions in in foreign language classes.

研究実績の概要 |
During the academic year 2022 the monography summarizing the results from the original dataset collected before the pandemic in an in-class on-campus setting was finalized and published in a scientific book series based in Germany specializing on second language acquisition (“Giessener Beitraege zur Fremdsprachendidaktik” (book series), Narr Francke Attempto (publisher)). Publishing process in detail: April-June: Review by the editorial board of the book series; June-July: Revision of content details (addition of references, minor corrections); August-September: adaption to the formatting template; October-November: final adaptions (clarification of license issues (pictures), presentation of the transcripts, etc.); January 16th 2023: publication Besides working on the monography, data from different online cooperation project (COIL) was collected. One data set originates from a course with focus on cultural exchange between students at a German university and a Japanese university. The lingua franca was German. The second data set was collected in a course with participants from Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The meetings were planned and conducted by novice teachers from Germany. The focus of the course was language learning through TBLT. The extensive data shows interesting parallels but also some differences to the original data set.

理由
The research project as a whole is progressing not exactly as planned, due to the pandemic between 2020 and 2022. However, the changing circumstances are also a chance to reconsider previously set conditions and explore the research questions in an online setting.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This academic year will be the last year of this project focusing on face-threatening aspects of group work interaction during tasks. The analysis of my original data set acquired bevor the pandemic in an in-class setting has been finished, so that the goal for the current year is going to be the analysis of the online data which were collected in different online courses. The purpose of the analysis of the online data is to verify to what extend the categories which emerged from the in-class data are also relevant for the online group interaction. Notable differences are expected since the relationship between the students differs greatly. On the one hand participants from different countries who are not quite familiar with each other are expected to interact differently from students with a higher degree of familiarity. On the other hand, participants who speak the lingua franca as a first language might be perceived as experts and consequently the equality within the group is not given anymore. The plan is as follows: April-May: review and selection of the collected data; June-July: first interactional analysis (similar to CA for SLA (Conversational Analysis for Second Language Acquisition) in its German variation); August-September: verification of the preliminary results through discussion with experts in this field and literature review; October-November: finalizing the analysis; December-January: summary and discussion of the results for a paper; February-March: presentation at a conference and/or submission to a relevant scientific journal.
