| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research aims to understand how international higher education and study abroad contributes to knowledge diplomacy. A retrospective mixed-methods study on Japanese one-year study abroad students at US liberal arts colleges from 1963 to 2013 consists of a survey and follow-up interviews. The research examines the long-term impacts on academic, professional, and personal development. Subsequent life experiences are explored through a transnational lens to understand study abroad's role in creating connections between Japan to the US and wider world.

| 研究成果の概要 |
現在の国際社会では、多くの国家が協力しつつ競いあって知識基盤を拡大させており、「知識外交(knowledge diplomacy)」の重要性が増している。本研究は、日米の高等教育における国際化や留学が知識外交とどのように連関しているのかについて、定量的・定性的な実証的知見を提供するものである。ケーススタディでは、1963年から2013年までの50年間、米国の大学に留学した日本人の1年留学の長期的な成果に着目している。本研究成果は、留学先の国や世界とのつながりや意識が高まることで、知識外交における留学プログラムの役割を明確に示すものである。
