研究概要

西アジアにおけるヒツジ遊牧の成立過程を解明するため、移牧先農業の盛衰という新たな視点を導入し、ヨルダン南部ジャフル盆地におけるダム遺構の変遷を追跡した。その結果、「大型かつ開放的プランの貯留式灌漑農業用ダム」から「小型かつ閉鎖的プランの貯水専用ダム」への、構造的・機能的変遷が明らかになった。また、前者が定住域寄りに偏在し、しばしば移牧拠点とペアを成すのに対して、後者は沙漠の奥にまで分布し、通常単独で運営されていることも判明した。従って、前者は移牧民の本格的な社会インフラ、後者は遊牧民の簡易インフラと定義される。従来の墓制編年にダム編年が加わったことによって、生(水)と死(墓)の両面から、遊牧化の過程を辿ることができるようになった。
