本研究は、北アフリカ諸国の伝統的地場産業として、チュニジアのオリーブ油精製工場とエジプトの繊維工場を対象とし、生産性に関するミクロ実証分析を行ったものである。実証分析では、確率論的フロンティア生産関数と技術非効率性決定式を同時推計することにより、効率性改善の要因を特定した。実証結果としては、機械設備の水準、労働者の熟練度・経験、原材料の安定的調達や品質管理が、効率性改善に貢献していることが明らかとなり、北アフリカの伝統産業では、人的資本や知識・経験の蓄積が生産において決定的な役割を持ち、知識経営論における暗黙知の貢献が高いことが示唆された。
