I successfully defended my PhD thesis in March, 2022. The thesis chapter one or the first AIM has been accepted in the Microbiome journal (impact factor 14.65). I examined the evolution of termite gut microbial functions across 150 million years of evolution. I also finished the analysis, figures, and manuscript writing for the second AIM of the project, in which I analyzed the gut microbial composition in 202 termite samples across termite evolutionary history. The manuscript for this project is almost ready for submission to a high-impact factor journal. Finally, the last AIM of the project was analyzed as part of the third chapter of the thesis. This chapter involved examining microbial gene family evolution using phylogenetic methods to investigate the role of Horizonal Gene Transfer and multiple acquisitions from the environment on metabolic genes. The top ten microbial gene families were examined in the thesis chapter, which is now being scaled up to the remaining hundred gene families. The scripts have been standardized, and the manuscript will be ready in the next few months.
