研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research firstly attempts to address two questions: why has solitary laughter been relegated to a position of almost complete silence?; how has solitary laughter been marginalized? It then seeks, through affect theory and related philosophy such as that of Deleuze to articulate ways in which solitary laughter may be conceived differently. Ultimately, it attempts to show how laughter may serve positive functions in the context of dramatic social change in which solitude itself is being reconfigured and reappraised.

研究実績の概要 |
In order to establish the history of academic and popular work and thoughts on the subject of solitary laughter in English, I undertook a literature review through academic and popular data bases with terms related to the subject of solitary laughter with a colleague from the field of psychology. This extensive work produced a large amount of data and this was tabulated and became the basis of an article on the subject of the history and significance of solitary laughter. My colleague and I have submitted this for acceptance at an international journal in the field of psychology. We are awaiting the review. Working with psychology researchers took my research onto a slightly different path related to the broad theoretical frameworks within which laughter is conceptualized. With two other researchers from Britain, I submitted an article on positive psychology and autoethnographic method titled “You can end up in a happy place” (Voyce): a role for positive autoethnography”, which was published in the journal Mental Health and Social Inclusion in April 2023 and represents an innovative and unique combination of two formerly disparate fields. I was also invited to participate in the editing of a future book on the subject of autoethnographic writing in the context of positive psychological methods.

理由
Two issues have negatively impacted my progress on the planned research. The first is the COVID virus, which prevented me from joining an international conference to explain my research and receive essential input from colleagues in the field. The second is that my work seeking to establish the history of previous work on the subject of solitary laughter has been extremely time-consuming.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
My plan for the coming year is to write an article on the significance of solitary laughter in relation to philosophy, philosophical reflections on solitude, and recent social psychological work on solitude. I hope to publish this by the end of the present academic year.
