研究開始時の研究の概要 |
I would like to extend the work that I had been doing on the environmental sensibility of the English Romantics (Kaken Project ID 25370319) to the artists of the Arts and Crafts movement and contemporary Japanese steampunk. The revival of Victorian techniques and motifs by Nozomu Shibata, Michihiro Matsuoka and Akishi Ueda echoes the revival of medieval techniques and motifs by Frank Brangwyn and other disciples of William Morris. Both movements are essentially anti-technological and anti-capitalist in orientation, in which environmental and ecological themes are prominent.

研究実績の概要 |
I spent most of the academic year pursuing the research that I would have done the year before if not for Covid. I have basically: 1. completed my research on William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement; 2. read Japanese sources on the history and practice of metalsmithing (鍛金); 3. attended and evaluated the largest steampunk festival in Japan: 超スチームパーク (April 29-30, 2022); 4. attended and evaluated the largest steampunk festival in Britain: The Asylum Steampunk (August 26-29, 2022); 5. attended a local exhibition on the Arts and Crafts movement: アーツ・アンド・クラフツとデザイン―ウィリアム・モリスからフランク・ロイド・ライトまで (January 28 - March 26, 2023); 6. decided on the visual and literary resources I am going to relate to Nozomu Shibata as steampunk artist and metalsmith. '"Me, an Occasional Metalsmith": Art, Craft and Everyday Life', my proposal for a presentation on steampunk sculptor Nozomu Shibata, was accepted on February 25, 2023 for the 3rd International Colloquium in Contemporary Philosophy and Culture, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, from June 8-10, 2023. I have also submitted a chapter proposal for Pierpaolo Ascari and Andrea Borsari's *Aesthetics of Steampunk*, which was also accepted. This will be my main publication for the project.
