研究開始時の研究の概要 |
We will investigate how patterns of eye-movements during reading differ between native and non-native speakers of a language. This will provide insight into the comprehension processes used by native and non-native speakers, including further insight into the development of automaticity during language acquisition and which structures remain difficult for non-native speakers even as proficiency approaches native level, and will have implications for how best to improve the proficiency of non-native speakers.

研究実績の概要 |
The goal of this research is to collect eye movement/reading time data. Unfortunately, we have been unable to collect data during the last year due to restrictions due to COVID19. The collection of eye tracking data requires the participants and researchers to be in a confined area (i.e., the room where the eye tracking equipment is located) - a situation which is not possible under the current restrictions. We plan to start collecting data within the next month. In addition, we continue to collect preliminary data (online self-paced reading time data and sentence completion data from native speakers of English) which will serve as a partial control for the eye movement data which we hope to collect from Japanese speakers of English.

理由
The goal of this research is to collect eye movement/reading time data from Japanese speakers of English with varying levels of proficiency for comparison with data from native speakers of English. Unfortunately, we have been unable to collect data during the last year due to restrictions due to COVID19. The collection of eye tracking data requires the participants and researchers to be in a confined area (i.e., the room where the eye tracking equipment is located) - a situation which was not possible under the restrictions in place over the last year. In anticipation of changes in restrictions, we plan on starting to collect data within the next month.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
We anticipate being able to start collecting eye tracking data in May 2023 when COVID19 related restrictions are anticipated to be revised). In addition, we continue work on designing alternate experiments using on-line self-paced reading and other tasks to address the same theoretical issues as the originally planned eye tracking experiments.
