研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This study will investigate the impact of the linguistic and cultural background of students participating in English as a lingua franca (ELF) interactions in university English-Medium instruction (EMI) courses. The findings from this investigation will contribute to the current pool of knowledge regarding ELF interactional features and participant background. It aims to offer concrete recommendations for practitioners currently teaching or looking to implement EMI courses in contexts with a multilingual student body, thus helping to advance the internationalisation of Japanese universities.

研究実績の概要 |
Last academic year, I was able to collect data from 8 volunteer undergraduate student participants. I recorded a series of task interactions involving domestic English-as-a-lingua-franca (ELF) and English-as-a-native-language (ENL) speakers. I was also able to collect questionnaire data from students studying in undergraduate English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) classes.
After analysis of the questionnaire data and some initial analysis of the task interaction data, I presented some early findings at CUE Conference 2024 in September 2024. Possibly the most interesting finding to date in the extent to which the interaction data shows the detrimental impact of native speakerism on the student-student interactions.

理由
The pandemic had a significant impact on the progress of my study. The purpose of my research was to explore interactions between Japanese undergraduate students and overseas exchange students. However, the pandemic shut down study abroad completely for some time and it still has not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Therefore, I have had to adapt my data collection protocols and focus more on the micro-analysis of a smaller number of task interactions. Fortunately, in the past 12 months, I have finally been able to make some progress with data collection, subsequent analysis, and the public presentations of some findings.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Over the course of the current academic year, I plan to further analyse my data, possibly collect further data, and present my findings at two or possibly three international conferences. I also plan to prepare my findings for publication and I hope to submit one, or possible two, papers for publication this year.
I do not anticipate any fundamental challenges to my plan in the current year, which is also the final year of the project.
