研究実績の概要 |
During the third year of the grant, the following research activities were achieved: 1.Bilingual book club events were held with the last two prototype stories planned for the third year of the grant: a. Japan Focus story (July 13, 2022) b. Chinese Focus story (January 11th, 2023) These events helped the CLA team to investigate the quality of texts created, the methodology for conducting bilingual discussions, and the need for making changes to both the methodology and texts themselves. 2.With regard to giving presentations about this research, four presentations were given. Two at university-based symposia, and two at international conferences. 3.With regard to publications, the progress involved negative feedback regarding my application mixed method research theory to the interpretation of data for the design roles for Teaching Assistants (TAs) in literature circles. This article was submitted to The Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education but was rejected. The article was posted as a pre-print in order to help garner feedback for revising my current research methods: Sevigny, P. (26 October 2022). Designing a role for TAs in L2 literature circles. PREPRINT (Version 1) available at Research Square In response to the feedback provided, I have asked a second researcher from another university to be a second rater and to expand qualitative tagging of six discussion transcripts.

理由
The COVID-19 pandemic slowed progress on the project because there were no multicultural weeks and Grand Show events which are normally held at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University whose scripts were planned to be the sources of our short stories. We had to move to recruiting student authors who could write culturally-based short stories from scratch that could in the future become the basis for Grand Show Stage Play scripts. There was also some difficulty with student authors and manager turnover, eg., the Sri Lankan author who graduated and could not complete his story, and our Korean student manager who had to leave to finish grad school applications.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
All six stories have been completed. The CLAs have also completed six illustrations for each story, and during the AY2023 spring semester, the finalized texts of the Stage 2 and Stage 1 versions are being finalized and added to the website www.studiocla.org/stories. Also, another team of CLAs has been completing audio books for each story version and later in AY2023, these audio versions will be added to the website. Another change in plan is that for this year, instead of aiming to make ‘print on demand’ versions of the stories available online, we are repackaging the English stories in a format that can be used by the web-based platform Xreading.com. The CEO of that company has approached me with an interest to publish our stories for learners there. Paper, print-on-demand versions can come later, after the period of the grant has expired. By the end of AY2023, the online anthology of stories will be complete, and the official launch of the website will have taken place. Also, the teacher’s manual for using the resources will be made available on the same website. Currently, four calls for proposals at international conferences have been accepted and these presentations are being prepared. At least one more journal article will be submitted in AY2023.
