研究開始時の研究の概要 |
Until now, behavioral data on a bilingual advantage in executive function has not yet been clearly supported by neuroimaging. Proven existence could have profound implications for neurodegenerative disease treatment and/or provide justification for reform of second and foreign language education. Differential brain activation (or lack thereof) between subjects of differing English proficiency could help shed light on this contentious subject.

研究実績の概要 |
During fiscal year 2023, to explore the effects of second language (L2) proficiency on frontal brain activity of L1-Japanese-speaking Kyushu University students during a verbal fluency task to determine the existence of a bilingual advantage in executive function, data was collected from an additional 16 subjects (for a total of 20 since the start of the experiment).
Raw data collected included the following: demographic data, handedness data, English vocabulary level as measured by the Pearson Expressive Vocabulary Test, and changes in oxygenated hemoglobin level in pre-frontal brain areas during a "FAS" test as measured by 16-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device.
Raw data is currently being prepared for data analysis to determine if differences in L2 proficiency can be observed in frontal brain regions using neuroimaging.
