The simulation results from my work in FY2022 provided novel insights into the structural determinants that finely tune neuron-astrocyte communication in the brain. This work is of high importance as such investigations cannot be performed in live tissue because of the technical limitations to study biological processes at the nanoscale. The CellScatter software developed during FY2022 will provide computational scientists with realistic 3D cell reconstructions in open-access to investigate various (patho-)physiological biological conditions. We expect that it will have a big impact on the cell biology and neuroscience communities, paving the way for future experimental and theoretical studies on the structural determinants of biochemical processes in health and disease. Overall, this work unraveled mechanisms by which the complex intracellular nano-architecture shapes the spatio-temporal properties of biochemical signals in health and disease. In FY2022, this work has led to the publication of 2 articles in peer-reviewed international journals (DOI: 10.1002/glia.24258 and 10.1007/s12031-022-02006-w). An additional manuscript is under peer review (DOI: 10.1101/2022.02.28.482292) and another is in preparation (Denizot et al., 2023, in prep.). I presented those results at both national and international events: 2 talks (Society for Neuroscience, online, Nov 2022 and the 45th Annual Meeting of the Japan Neuroscience Society, Japan, June 2022) and 1 poster (Federation of European Neuroscience Societies Forum 2022, Paris, France, July 2022).
