研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The present study aims to investigate the acquisition of grammatical constructions through repetition-based pedagogical methods. In this study, participants will be tested for knowledge of two grammatical constructions (the ditransitive and caused-motion constructions) using a syntactic priming test, before and after repetition-based instruction. The syntactic priming test shows implicit knowledge of these constructions and therefore the teaching methodology can be tested in terms of the implicit knowledge that learners gain or fail to gain.

研究実績の概要 |
This study examines the acquisition of grammatical constructions in English as a second language, through repetition-based pedagogical activities, as measured with a grammatical priming task, administered before and after the pedagogical intervention. In the first year of the project, we investigated corpus data on verbs in the ditransitive construction and the caused motion construction to prepare the creation of the pre-task and post-task. We also use that research to develop the pedagogical treatment. In the second year of the project, we chose Inquisit 6 as a software tool to create the materials for the treatment and tests, and designed the pre-test, post-test, and treatment tasks to be used in the study. This was chosen in order to allow the tasks and treatment to be conducted online, so that problems with access to participants due to the COVID-19 pandemic could be overcome.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, recruiting participants for the study has proved difficult, so it was decided to implement an approach that could be conducted online using Inquisit 6.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the first part of this coming year, we will conduct a pilot study of the materials developed for the grammatical priming pre-task and post-task, and the pedagogical intervention. In the second half of this year, we intend to recruit participants and conduct the main study.
