研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The aim of the project is to produce a large-scale corpus of student generated texts of academic English, in order to understand the written and spoken vocabulary requirements of different IELTS levels. Participants will number over 1400 L2 post-graduates studying at a large UK university.

研究実績の概要 |
This project created a database of the written and spoken language of over 200 second language students from a wide variety of L1 backgrounds and proficiency (IELTS 5.5 - 8). This database was investigated in two ways. The first analysed written essays in terms of their lexical diversity. The main findings were that the measures of lexical diversity used were (to varying degrees) related to IELTS proficiency levels. Another methodological finding was that when counting words it makes a difference if words are counted as flemmas or lemmas. The second (ongoing) investigation explored the spoken data to measure the impact of multi-word-unit use on fluency. The findings suggest that L2 learners that use 2- 5 word phrases well are also the learners that receive high IELTS spoken grades.
