研究開始時の研究の概要

English language teaching is adapting to English's growing status as a lingua franca. Approaches thus far have varied widely, so it is necessary to measure the field's current status. This project will employ a critical discourse analysis lens to map the use of terms and concepts related to these approaches in professional ELT discourse. It will be multimethodological, pulling tools and perspectives from corpus linguistics, genre analysis, and discourse analysis to provide a complex picture of both the discourse itself and the beliefs and identities underlying that discourse.

研究実績の概要

We have almost completed a research publication based upon the pilot project that we undertook when the COVID-19 lockdowns prevented us from starting the main project. The paper will be submitted to the journal "World Englishes", the premier journal in the field of the internationalization of English. This paper will demonstrate, using genre analysis principles and Hodge's fractal approach to discourse analysis, it is possible to draw conclusions about the core implication of commonly used jargon with highly variable meanings. Of particular note has been the finding that the interaction between the various terms studied indicates cases where terms which are often assumed to be distinct are actually being used as equivalents. In addition, we have found that even though some prominent researchers assign fixed, ideologically charged meanings to certain terms, in most cases, at least in this corpus, the terms were used in mundane ways without carrying allegiance to specific ideologies regarding the globalization of English.

On the main project, once we have removed all extraneous data from the data set, we will have a corpus of approximately 20 million tokens, which is a much larger corpus than we had originally anticipated, and a sizable fraction of the most relevant reference corpora. This will give our conclusions greater statistical significance and explanatory power. We have completed initial quantitative analysis of some of this data, which is showing both similarities and differences from that found in our pilot study.

理由

The project is entering its final year, though we are planning to ask for a one-year extension. This is because we were delayed in the first year of the project due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. These lockdowns prevented us from getting RAs to do data processing. While we were able to use that time to run a pilot project (see above), main data collection was not possible until the second year, and even during that year it was slow. While we have tried to catch up, we were not able to completely return to the planned schedule for the main project. As such, we believe that a one-year extension will be beneficial because it will let us complete the full project that we had originally planned.

今後の研究の推進方策

In the present year we plan to complete all quantitative data analysis. Based upon the results of that analysis, we will determine what qualitative approaches will be most beneficial, and begin to apply those. The pilot project demonstrated the benefit of several different approaches, but one outstanding question will be how to scale those approaches to the much larger data set. Following data analysis, we plan to compile our results for presentation and publication.
