| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The impact of Brexit on the future territorial integrity of the United Kingdom (UK) could prove to be profound. The possibility of an independent Scotland and a united Ireland means that the UK might not exist in 10-years time. The goal of this project is to paint a picture of the political situation in Northern Ireland where remaining part of the UK or supporting a united Ireland is becoming the dominant political question.

| 研究実績の概要 |
Via active subscriptions to the Belfast Telegraph, Irish Times and the Belfast Newsletter and the purchase of numerous books I have been able to closely follow events during the past year. A further series of elite interviews in Belfast, Dublin and London and attendance at a number of debates on the research topic (including in the UK House of Commons) further consolidated my knowledge and network of contacts on both sides of the debate. I was able to give a presentation at the Japan Association for Comparative Politics in June 2023. The paper sought to tentatively combine empirical data within an institutionalist conceptual framework. A short report, stemming from a presentation in the previous year, was published in the EU Kyushu Newsletter in August 2023.

理由
The complexity of this contested debate, combined with my desire to remain academically neutral, has undoubtedly increased the amount of time necessary to ensure a nuanced and fair-minded approach towards the opponents and proponents of constitutional change.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
I have managed to secure a press pass in order to attend an arena event entitled 'Pathway to Change' organized by the proponents of a united Ireland in June 2024. A press pass, compared to an ordinary delegates pass, will afford me unfettered access to all sections of the arena so should hopefully enable me to conduct on the spot interviews as well as listen to the debates. I will continue building my historical and contemporary knowledge of the politics of the island of Ireland during this forthcoming year. My plan is to make a presentation during this academic year and to submit a paper for peer review.
