研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This project explores the experiences of youth on the gender and sexual border, people who find traditional male-female gender concepts problematic using life histories as the research method. We focus on how people choose their gender and sexuality terms and create new practices to match them.

研究実績の概要 |
We have managed to get our data transcribed and our team members have done work to collaborate with other researchers also doing similar research. We have also continued to follow the work of one of our main sources on social media. This deep level of insight has allowed us to see how a personal level of transformation and understanding through gender can affect multiple areas of one's life. It is quite common to think of gender as being something that is personal or within the psyche, however after interviewing our source and looking at the transcribed data we can see that this level of personal understanding has strong impacts in how we work with other people in our day-to-day lives. It also gives us a rare chance to look at someone who has been given the opportunity to take their personal gender explorations and combine it with their long term growth in terms of work and career. We believe this to be a fairly rare phenomenon in Japan and feel much gratitude towards our informant for sharing with us this personal level of growth.
Additionally, many of us have found different opportunities to present at conferences and other forums that match our overall goals of exploring the life histories of individuals who find themselves living at the borders of traditional binary gender positions. These collaborations have led to opportunities to share our research with new audiences and also have resulted in publication opportunities which we have accepted.

3: やや遅れている
理由
We obviously experienced a certain amount of delay due to the continued difficulties presented by the coronavirus and its associated global pandemic. Many of the conferences that we would typically attend have only recently gone back into action. Additionally, we have also found it difficult to find interviewees to work with in Japan. Many people still do not feel comfortable being interviewed face to face and at the same time many people still do not have adequate technology or Internet access that allows for smooth and easy recording and transcription of their interviews to the level that we would like.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
We intend to continue our research during this year by trying to still collect more data and at the same time putting together a large panel to present at the American Anthropological Association, one of the largest academic organizations/conferences. We are also talking with other researchers with the possibility of expanding and continuing this line of research in other countries where people do not have the same anxieties regarding the pandemic. We also hope to put together some small scale public events to highlight the collaborations we have undertaken during this project sometime this year.
