研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This project explores the experiences of youth on the gender and sexual border, people who find traditional male-female gender concepts problematic using life histories as the research method. We focus on how people choose their gender and sexuality terms and create new practices to match them.

研究実績の概要 |
Using the data that we collected in our study, we were able to do a number of conference presentations and in addition we managed to publish several English publications during the previous year. Among the several conferences that we presented at, we are particularly proud of our presentations at the International Pragmatics Association conference in Belgium which received much positive feedback from other scholars within the field of linguistics and linguistic anthropology. We also received excellent feedback from our panel at the special American Anthropological Association conference held in Toronto in conjunction with the Canadian Anthropology Society. This was a very rare opportunity as it was a combination of two very large national level conferences from two of the most influential English-speaking countries within academia. Through this we were able to make connections for future research possibilities that will benefit both North America and Japan in terms of scholarly research publications. Our research findings through this project we're also prominently featured in two chapters of a new edited volume on gender in Japanese popular culture. These publications are sure to reach a wide audience as they were able to be published from a highly reputable academic publisher in Open Access format through a joint project with the government of Finland.

理由
We believe this project is progressing rather well after the relatively slow start we had due to the pandemic. Despite the slow start in the first two years which we attribute to the difficulties in returning to the type of normal interactions expected at international conferences which is where many of the connections necessary for high-level academic publications are founded, we feel that our project is finally starting to progress rather smoothly with our successful presentations at several conferences both domestic and international as well as through our new articles in international academic publications.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Two of our project members plan on using our remaining funds during this year to do another presentation at the American Anthropological Association annual meeting. Within the field of linguistic anthropology, this conference is considered to be one of the main venues to present findings and receive helpful/constructive feedback in order to publish our results in high level English language peer-reviewed academic journals. We also plan to collect some additional data from one of our main participants who is growing more and more successful at combining their passion for joso with their long-term career and life plans. By collecting this additional data and making these presentations to other skilled and respected researchers within our field we hope to eventually have enough findings which could lead to the publication of a book or perhaps an edited volume.
