研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research aims to identify the needs for language learners to manage their emotions in the local university context as variable selection (Phase 1), model the relationships of longitudinal cross-sections of national surveys with emerging adults (Phase 2), and evaluate an evidence-based program with a well-controlled trial (Phase 3). This research is in step with advances in work on positive psychology and emotions in language learning and expects to advance research on learner emotions by extending the glossary of techniques to change self-reported levels of self-efficacy and anxiety.

研究実績の概要 |
The purpose of this project is to improve the self-views of anxious English language learners in Japan with a program that integrates effective educational and support materials from stress and anxiety management. Two project-related posters and two oral presentations were made at at a total of four international academic conferences. Two project-related keynote talks were also given for international students and educators. The PI led one manuscript and directly contributed to four other impact publications that provided new empirical evidence of project-related variables and methodological techniques. Funds were used to renew a software license for data management, purchase teaching materials, and pay for conference-related participation and travel fees.

理由
Results of the first wave of the survey (Phase 2) have now been presented at international conferences on positive psychology, educational research, human flourishing, and the quality-of-life studies. Analysis of the second wave of the survey began last fall. Mixed-methods use of the qualitative data (Phases 1 and 2) has yet to be done, but the the PI became more familiar with the software routines, tools, and documentation by mentoring an undergraduate student research project. The primary educational materials for the program have been identified but not organized into a final format for implementation. Two pilot feasibility trials (within-subject designs) have been conducted for the intervention, but data collection for the Phase 3 cluster randomized controlled trial is forthcoming.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
The PI is recruiting expertise from three experienced researchers in implementation science to improve the intervention ahead of the cluster randomized trial of the educational intervention, which is planned for the second or third quarter of 2024, pending ethical approval. Review of the CONSORT guidelines-based procedure and related literature for educational trial designs is ongoing. It is expected that a manipulation check may be necessary for certain design elements using an online behavioral experiment. Preparing manuscripts for relevant impact factor journal(s) based on prior oral presentations and the first two phases is expected to be the main target for progress throughout the year. Future work to incorporate speech communication laboratory methods is under consideration.
