This study compares the effectiveness of two flashcard formats for learning English words, Japanese-English paired-associates (e.g. 学生-student) and sentence gap-fillings (e.g. He is a third-year college s____.), by using eye-tracking technology and vocabulary tests to measure lexical development.

| 研究実績の概要 |
Considering the COVID-19 situation during the early period of the project, adjustments were made to the original research plan to take accounts of the local research contexts. Different eye-tracking systems were investigated and compared, and a decision was reached on the most suitable system for the project. Then an eye-tracking lab was set up in the institution to provide technical support for the project. Research experiments were designed and programmed for the project by using online platforms and specialized software. Research assistants were recruited for the project and training was provided, such as how to facilitate data preprocessing with specialized programs. Participants were invited to work on the experiments and contribute research data. Academic literature on statistical analysis was consulted in order to select appropriate methods for analyzing the project data.
