研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research evaluates the experience of Geographical Indication (GI) laws in Asia from the perspective of specialized local food producers, particularly in Japan and Cambodia. Attention is paid to the potential contribution of smaller producers to sustainable development and rural revitalization.

研究実績の概要 |
This past year included a busy schedule revisiting field sites in Japan and attending to those in Cambodia, which could not be visited during Covid-19 pandemic. Cambodia fieldwork resumed in February 2023, covering five new case studies. In September 2022, Japan fieldwork continued with case studies of sake, grape wine, Hatcho miso, and kaki. Many conference visits were included in the post-Covid-19 year, including a major GI related conference in Montpellier, France, in which I presented three papers. Later in 2022, a visit to Australia for the International Rural Sociology Association congress included one presentation on Asia-wide GIs. Three publications emerged in FY2022 in major and minor journals concerning GI, especially a major paper in International Sociology.

理由
Since the decline of Covid-19 restrictions, fieldwork and collaborations have picked up pace very fast. This allowed me to maximize time in the field along budget constraints, including a 3-year-due visit to Cambodia. Collaborations were helped by visiting post-doctoral researchers and visiting scholars at Kyoto University who helped speed along research. In addition, major conferences resumed this year that enhanced collaboration work.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This year will include new case studies in Japan, and continuation of follow-up fieldwork on the case studies in Cambodia. I plan to revisit some areas that I visited prior to the pandemic to determine how they have evolved during the food trade crisis, and how they view the new world order for intellectual property law. This year will also include presentations at major Congresses and minor workshops in Australia, China, Taiwan, and Cambodia.
