研究開始時の研究の概要 |
I aim to examine the factors, opportunities and initiations for the ‘creative development’ of the popular ‘ancient towns’, which are already in the stage of advanced heritage commoditization. I would like to determine the most sustainable development approach in the touristic living heritage sites.

研究実績の概要 |
In FY2022 I have continued my research on the 'creative destruction' and tourism development of the popular living heritage sites in Asia, by focusing on summarizing my research on Lijiang's Old Town case study prior to Covid-19's pandemic events. In June 2022 I have published an article titled "Heritage Commoditization in the Living Heritage Sites: A Case of 'Creative Destruction' in Lijiang’s Old Town in China" in the online peer-reviewed journal of The Twelfth International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS 12), Vol 1, Amsterdam University Press, pp. 104-113. During the pandemic I have collected information on Lijiang's current situation from local informants, however, could not visit Lijiang in the recent years for the planned fieldwork. Nevertheless, in February 2023 I could finally conduct planned fieldwork in Vietnam's most popular living heritage sites, with main focus on Hoi An's Old Town.I have spent two weeks in Hoi An, learning about current situation of the towns tourism and heritage preservation. I found that Hoi An's Old Town is already in the process of 'creative destruction'. I have realized that the management of the Old Town is challenged by the current over-tourism occurring in the town and as one of the solutions to reduce over-tourism there is planning further tourism activities development in the buffer areas - surrounding craft and eco-farm villages. During my fieldwork in Hoi An, I have filmed different sites and tourism activities of the Old Town with a purpose to create a short film on Hoi An's situation in 2023.

理由
My initial plan was to conduct fieldwork in Hoi An in Vietnam during FY 2021, however I could conduct research in Hoi An only at the end of FY 2022. Moreover, I still could not conduct fieldwork in China's popular Old Towns - Lijiang and Ping Yao, even though I kept researching online and have been in contact with Chinese researchers who conducted research on these towns in the recent years. In FY 2023 I hope to reach Lijiang and Ping Yao Old Towns for the planned fieldwork.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In FY 2023 I am planning to continue my research on Hoi An's creative destruction, as a case study of over-tourism impacts on displacement of the local communities and inevitable lost of the 'genius loci' of the original place, in case tourism development continues on unsustainable route as in Lijiang's and Hoi An's Old Town cases. I'm planning to summarize my research findings from Hoi An Old Town in academic article and to present my findings in Vietnam's Annual Regional Sustainable Development Conference (ARSDC) in the Southern Institute of Social Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City in July 2023 (in case my paper's proposal will be accepted). Moreover, I am planning to work on creating a short film on Hoi An's situation in 2023. If possible, during 2023 I am also planning to conduct fieldwork in Lijiang's and Ping Yao's Old Towns, and by the end of FY 2023 to summarize my research findings from China and Vietnam in a new academic article.
