研究開始時の研究の概要 |
Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) has become a serious health problem in Sri Lanka over the past two decades. It is vital to have reliable tools for early identification and prevention of ESRD and triage patients for different management procedures. The ideal model for the progression of the disease should be accurate, easy to implement, and generalizable across a spectrum of patients. Nutrition parameters are easy to measure and associated with the progression of the disease, and therefore the possibility of using them to detect the disease progression needs to be studied.

研究実績の概要 |
Ethical permission for the study was obtained. Two screening programs were conducted in the study area (Wilgamuwa, Sri Lanka) with the collaboration of the Centre for Research, Nephrology and Renal Transplant Unit at National Hospital, Kandy, Sri Lanka, to identify potential CKD/ CKDu patients. In addition, patients who are already registered in the Renal clinic in Wilgamuwa were recruited for the study. Age- and sex-matched controls were identified from the community sticking to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Required equipment (body composition analyzer and hand dynamometer) and consumables were bought and sent to Sri Lanka. Upon completing a thorough literature review, the original draft of the review article was prepared.

理由
The initiation of the study was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and various unexpected circumstances in Sri Lanka (political crisis, state of emergency, etc.). Despite the delays, subject recruitment and data collection were started in 2022. The principal investigator will be on maternity and childcare leave from 2023.03.31 to 2024.03.31. Therefore, the progress of the study will be delayed than previously planned. The research activities will be resumed from 2024.04.01.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
The principal investigator will be on maternity and childcare leave from 2023.03.31 to 2024.03.31. The research activities will be resumed from 2024.04.01. However, the research team in Sri Lanka will continue the follow-up of subjects as planned. After the resumption of research activities, data analysis will be started and the possibility to prepare manuscripts will be explored. In addition, it is hoped to publish the prepared review article.
