研究開始時の研究の概要 |
Western scholars and writers about Miller have extremely limited knowledge of the extensive Japanese scholarship and non-journal texts concerning Henry Miller. The purpose of this project is to integrate Japanese scholarship on Miller alongside western materials by creating a bibliographic decade-by-decade narrative that will reveal the shifting opinions concerning Miller. Going beyond a focus on English only sources, this research will incorporate international scholarly and media articles on Miller published in the following languages: Japanese, French, German, and English.

研究実績の概要 |
During this past year, I have been involved with organizing a global Henry Miller conference that will take place in October 2025. As one of the representatives from Japan, I will also be one of the featured speakers at the conference, which should attract more than 100 scholars and individuals interested in Henry Miller. As a guest speaker, I will be presenting on Miller’s impact and significance in Japan. The organization of the conference is being directed by members of the international Henry Miller journal, NEXUS, for which I am an associate editor.
Additionally, I have continued to collect articles on Miller and his global reputation. These resources are crucial for creating a clear image of Miller’s global media reception in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Since many of these articles are written in various language, a significant effort has been made to translate the articles into English in order to gather the key data points concerning Miller's media reputation.
Of significant value for this research has been the recent discovery of Miller's original letters to his Japanese translator, (飛田茂雄, 1927-2002). These letters provide insight into how Miller's works were being translated into Japanese, and thus how the media reviewed Miller's literary works and life.

理由
Over the last year, several hundred newspaper articles have been gathered for the years 1950-1975 concerning Henry Miller. Several of these articles were published in Japan and have been translated so as to be incorporated in the research aim of providing an international perspective of Miller's changing media reputation.
Due to various other avenues of research, a delay has occurred in traveling to Europe for data collections at the national libraries in France and Germany; however, plans are now being made to undertake this crucial research in September 2024.
Data analysis is being conducted with the analysis software AtlasTI in order to determine five broad categories in how Miller was represented in the media. These categories will form the basis of the articles for publication.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Two major research trips are planned for September 2024 and March 2025. The first research trip will target national libraries in France and Germany in order to gather German and French language articles concerning Miller. The research assumption is that in Europe, Miller held a different literary reputation than in North America and Japan.
The second research project will involve traveling to the United States and visiting the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Both institutions hold thousands of undigitized media publications that contain an American perspective on Miller.
Additional preparation will continue for the 2025 International Henry Miller conference to be held in California.
