In my previous year's report, what I described as "the most significant development" of that year was my decision to expand the scope of this study to consider the media reporting of youth crime in the UK from a historical perspective, specifically by focusing on the 17th century. During the current year, the third year of this three-year project, this aspect of the project has acquired increasing prominence. Hence, in accordance with that development, during this year, I have focused on the following three activities.
1. Text acquisition. In particular, this work has involved searching for and obtaining English 17th-century news texts related to youth crime. Although such texts are increasingly available online, obviating the need to either visit overseas libraries or request copies from them, they are still frequently not available in editable form, meaning that, given their poor legibility, they must be manually transcribed, which is a time-consuming process.
2. Text analysis. This work has involved examining specific news texts, from a Critical Discourse Analysis and Systemic Functional Linguistic perspective, in order to identify and interpret their characteristic linguistic and discoursal features. This aspect of the work has been greatly facilitated by the use of the text analysis software package, Wordsmith Tools.
3. Publication. I published one paper based on my research and have been preparing to publish further papers and give a number of presentations at international conferences.

理由
Unfortunately, despite the progress made during this year, the overall project has been significantly delayed by the two serious physical accidents that I suffered in 2022 and 2024, both of which required periods of hospitalisation followed prolonged periods of recuperation and rehabilitation. For that reason, I have not made as much progress as I had hoped and, consequently, it was necessary to apply for a one-year extension.

Since my application for a one-year extension has been approved, I am now planning to spend the next year, which is the fourth and final year of this project, on completing my analysis of English 17th-century youth crime news texts and making the results of my analysis publicly available through the production of a monograph on the subject, a number of journal papers and some presentations at international conferences.
