The purpose of this study is to explore how different post-tsunami coastal communities reimagine, rebuild, and recover relationships with waves and seas through surf tourism. Detailing the intersections of life, leisure and tourism along the post-tsunami coastlines of Fukushima (Japan) and Ache (Indonesia), the study examines how surf tourism may be used to rebuild human-environment relations in post-disaster settings, and to share disaster experiences of the tsunami affected areas as part of knowledge exchange and healing.

| 研究実績の概要 |
This project explores the role of surf tourism for post-tsunami recovery in the tsunami affected regions of Fukushima (Japan) and Aceh (Indonesia). The objective is to understand how surf tourism is used to recover relationships with ocean and to share disaster experiences of the tsunami affected areas as part of knowledge exchange and restorative justice. In FY2022 a network was established between the Aceh and Fukushima surfing communities. FY2023 was dedicated to connecting the coastal communities on Lhoknga (Aceh) and Iwasawa Beach (Fukushima). The aim of this year was to share stories between these two communities, resulting in a total of 3 workshops/public lectures in Aceh, and 1 public lecture in Fukushima. In FY2023, a questionnaire survey at Kitaizumi Beach in Minamisoma City, was also conducted in Fukushima City and Koriyama City, and 142 respondents were obtained. The survey included questions on how surf tourists to Fukushima interact with the ocean, such as frequency and purpose of visits to the ocean, as well as questions on how they perceive and feel about the discharge of the ALPS treated water and how information about it should be provided. Results of both the events and surveys will be submitted for publication in FY2024.

理由
The plan for FY2023 was to conduct 4 workshops/symposium/public lectures for the Fukushima and Aceh coastal communities to share thier stories with one another. 3 public seminars were conducted in Aceh (Indonesia) in February 2024. The public seminars were held in Aceh and were coordinated by the PI and conducted with members of the Fukushima surfing community. The public seminars in Aceh included: 1) Ngupi with Aceh & Fukushima: Sharing Experiences of Tsunami, Surf and Community to "Get Our Stories Back", Adam Doering, Yuko Takahashi, Yuki Saito, Yasuhiro Matsumoto, Presented at the International Center for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies [ICAIOS] Public Discussion Series #102, Feb 19, 2024. 2. Public film screening and talk session of Yuki Saito's "Free & Easy" 『free & easy, 平和と共創の世界』held at Sophie's Sunset Library in Lhoknga Beach, Aceh (Indonesia), on February 17, 2024. 3) Ngupi with Aceh-Fukushima. Featuring Anitoya’s “Free & Easy” film screening and talk at Central Cafe Aceh, 2024, 2/20. Upon returning to Fukushima, these experiences were shared during another public workshop at the "Let’s Surf on 3.11" surf tourism and art event held at Engawanoie in Hirono Town (Fukushima on March 11, 2024. During the summer, surveys were also completed at Minamisoma beach that explored the effects of the ALPS treated water discharge on surf tourism in the region. Overall, the study progressed very well. The only short coming is that the PI and Co-I could not attend international conferences due increases costs and budget constraints.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
In FY2022, connections were made between Aceh and Fukushima coastal communities, when the PI and Fuksuhima collaborators visited Aceh for two weeks in February 2024. At that time, several events were held designed for these tsunami affected communities to share their stories with each other as a form of restorative justice, being able to share their stories in their own way through their own voice. In Miamisoma, fieldwork and questionnaires were also conducted to explore how the ALPS treated water was impacting coastal tourism to the region in FY2023. For FY2024, the plan is threefold. First, in October 2024 the Iwasawa surfing community will hold its second surfing competition since the disaster. As a form of surf tourism, this competition will bring surfers from outside the prefecture. As part of this study we will invite and host members of the Aceh surfing community and hold a public discussion session during the event for the Aceh coastal community to share their stories in Fukushima. Second, the data from the Minamisoma surveys surveys will be tabulated and analysed, with additional fieldwork being conducted in teh summer if more information is needed. Third, both research streams will be submitted for publication in international peer-reviewed journals by YE2024.
