研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The purpose of this study is to explore how different post-tsunami coastal communities reimagine, rebuild, and recover relationships with waves and seas through surf tourism. Detailing the intersections of life, leisure and tourism along the post-tsunami coastlines of Fukushima (Japan) and Ache (Indonesia), the study examines how surf tourism may be used to rebuild human-environment relations in post-disaster settings, and to share disaster experiences of the tsunami affected areas as part of knowledge exchange and healing.

研究実績の概要 |
This project explores the role of surf tourism for post-tsunami recovery to understand how surf tourism is used to recover relationships with waves and the sea in post-tsunami settings, and to share disaster experiences of the tsunami affected areas as part of knowledge exchange and transfer. Preliminary fieldwork was conducted in Fukushima and Aceh, and new networks established between Hirono (Fukushima) and Lhoknga (Aceh). This resulted in a collaborative symposium held at ICAIOS research center in Aceh.

理由
Following fieldwork conducted in Hirono Town in Fukushima and two weeks fieldwork in Aceh, a collaborative symposium titled, "Return to surf in post-tsunami Aceh and Fukushima" was organized to share the post-tsunami recovery experiences between these two communities at the 91st International Center for Ache and Indian Ocean Studies (ICAIOS) Panel Discussion Series. Members of the Hirono surfing community were invited guests speakers and Aceh surf tourism community were also in attendance. Initial discussions of this study were also presented at The Fifth Northern European Conference on Emergency and Disaster Studies (NEEDS 2021) in Sweden (Sep 22, 2022). Both communities are enthusiastic about organizing more collaborative events in the near future.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Foundations have been set for further research and outcomes for 2023. Plans are underway to organize a workshop in Hirono (Fukushima) where stakeholders involved in the recovery of Aceh's post-tsunami recovery can travel to Fukushima to share their experience in person. It is anticipated this event will take place either in August 2022 or on March 11, 2023. In December, the results of the first round of fieldwork will be presented at the 17th World Leisure Congress, 11 - 15 December 2023 in Dunedin, New Zealand. A second round of fieldwork will be conducted in Aceh in March 2024, where members from the Hirono community will come to share their experiences at a workshop in Lhoknga and Banda Aceh. The survey work in Minamisoma will also commence in the summer of 2023 and results analyzed.
