研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The research aims at studying the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the bank lending in the European Union member states and the role of these banks in the post-pandemic economic recovery. Specifically, the two points considered are: (1) what bank characteristics are important for banks to continue lending; (2) how bank characteristics and lending influence the economic growth during and after the pandemic. The results provide insights into banks' ability to finance economic recovery as well as on the differences across member states which might affect future cross-country growth disparities.

研究実績の概要 |
In the first year of the project the researcher, first, carried out the analysis of an impact of financial system development on economic growth in Europe generally as well as during the main crises, including the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of the analysis showed that larger banking system in the European countries is generally related to lower growth. This negative relationship becomes especially strong at the time of the crisis, most prominently the pandemic and the global financial crisis. Highly developed, large banking system, thus, not only does not protect the countries from economic slowdowns and recessions but can even deepen the negaive impacts of negative shocks like pandemic or financial crisis. The above-mentioned research results were presented at the research workshop and need further development in the direction of cross-country differences as well as reasons that influence such a relationship between banking sector and growth. Second, the researcher has carried out literature review on the channels through which banking sector and bank lending might affect growth. Basing on the review, the analysis on the post-pandemic impact of banking sector on growth is to be carried out.

理由
There were some issues related to data collection. Some of the data on the size and state of the financial system since the time of the pandemic was released at slower pace than expected and data collection took more time than planned. Lack of sufficient data has made part of the analysis on the banking sector role in the economic situation during the pandemic rather shallow at first and needed additional development at later stages. The researcher needed also to put more effort than originally expected on finishing the other research project, thus spent less time than planned on the Kakenhi project.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
From April 2023 the researcher is on the sabbatical leave. During research stay in Europe there are new opportunities to exchange information and opinions about the research topic and thus to structure the research so that it is even more relevant given the present macroeconomic and political situation. Specifically, based on research plan, the researcher will further develop the analysis carried out in the FY2022. Next, the researcher plans to analyse the role of banks in the post-pandemic recovery and growth. The focus will shift compared to the original research plan, however, towards the role of banks and their capabilities to finance green and digital transformation in Europe, given that these are at the moment one of the most important points of focus, when it comes to the issues of future growth in European countries.
