研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The research will be conducted as Participatory Action Research. It will use participatory research methods to create a rich picture of peri-urban water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) that includes all stakeholders’ viewpoints, priorities and recommendations. Throughout the research period, we will conduct interviews and surveys to determine community readiness for change, participants feelings towards civic engagement, and changes in participants WASH knowledge, attitudes and practices. Feedback from the broader community will be collected to gain insight on the co-design process.

研究実績の概要 |
The second year of the project had the following achievements: 1) Pilot of co-creation workshops for intervention with participants, and outlining of possible intervention areas. Co-creation workshops were conducted in two research sites with children and youth participants. In addition, children participants attended the Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition (June 12-14, 2023) in Lusaka where an intervention co-creation workshop was held with various water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) stakeholders. Stakeholder contacts were collected for future research collaboration. 2) Assessment of the Training and Activity Manual for WASH activities based on the pilot studies in the first year was conducted by training facilitators. The draft manual was updated based on feedback and is under a second implementation and review. The feedback from co-design workshops is being used to add chapters on intervention and implementation to the manual. In addition, a video manual is in progress to support future training of children and youth program facilitators. 3) A steering committee has been set up comprised of community members and WASH stakeholders for the purpose of garnering local support for interventions. 4) Publications and conference presentations have been made based on the initial stages of the research (information in subsequent sections).

理由
I was able to travel to Zambia to conduct research and meet with research collaborators. work progressed smoothly during the first have of the fiscal year. Unfortunately, due to poor health, my research work during the second half of the year was limited. In addition, Zambia had a cholera outbreak which delayed the opening of schools by about two months earlier this year (Jan-Feb 2024). Overall however, the research has made considerable progress thanks to the support of research collaborators. It is a positive sign for the sustainability of the project post research.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
More effort must be taken towards intervention design and implementation. We will conduct pilots focused on intervention design and implementation, and include draft versions of these to the training manual. In addition, the steering committee is yet to be used for intervention implementation. We hope these partnerships will improve intervention implementation efforts.
Efforts will also be made towards project sustainability post research and publication of original articles.
