研究開始時の研究の概要

A transient with fast brightness variance in UV/optical wavelengths ("fast transient") is of great interest in time-domain astronomy as their extreme properties not only relate to various aspects of astrophysics but help us to understand fundamental issues in cosmology. By carrying out innovative survey projects that are optimized to study fast transients with world-class survey facilities and follow-up network, we will carry out systematical studies of fast transients obtained from ongoing and forthcoming surveys. New findings of these intriguing transients can be expected in the near future.

研究実績の概要

A series of observations were carried out with worldwide observing facilities (e.g., 8.2m Subaru/HSC, 3.8m Seimei/TriCCS, 3.5m ARC, 2.5m WFST) in FY2022. A dozen of early-phase supernovae have been discovered and follow-up observations have been carried out via international collaborations successfully. With a promising number of early-phase type Ia supernovae discovered in FY2023, the long-standing progenitor and explosion issues of type Ia supernovae have been further investigated. Moreover, a promising number of early-phase core-collapse supernovae and fast blue optical transients have been successfully discovered with the new survey facility WFST in FY2023. Total four papers related to fast transients and transient surveys have been published in FY2023.

理由

A promising number of fast transients have been successfully discovered. By combining the current sample with early-phase supernovae discovered in the future observations, further understandings of the progenitor and explosion physics of supernovae can be achieved through statistical analysis. One scientific paper with data taken from Subaru has been published and a few more papers are in preparation, indicating the great advantage of carrying out not only supernova but other transient studies through our project. Moreover, a few papers by collaborating with other observing facilities have been published and more scientific outputs can be expected with the next generation ground-based (e.g. WFST) and space-borne survey facilities (e.g. EP) in FY2024.

今後の研究の推進方策

We plan to keep carrying out survey observations with Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam to study the nature of fast transients. At the meanwhile, international collaborations with new generation survey facilities such as the 2.5-m Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST) and Einstein Probe (EP), which are designed to study fast transients that show distinct variance in hours, minutes, or even seconds at different wavelength ranges. The origin of most previously discovered fast transients are still under debate and we expect to find hundreds of fast transients in the next few years. The great number of fast transients in the coming years will make our team a leading role of carrying out related studies in the world.
