研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research assesses the restoration of degraded socio-ecological systems through the ecological, social, and environmental benefits of a green infrastructure sustainably managed at multiple levels. An original restoration method is proposed, based on the conservation of preserved socio-ecological systems, the transformation of obsolete ones, such as abandoned gray infrastructure, and the sustaining of a socio-ecological restoration of the system using scenarios generated and assessed through the Delphi method. As a study case, the historic district of Kanazawa city is the chosen area.

研究実績の概要 |
Stage 1-Conservation (almost completed); Stage 2-TRASFORMATION (partially implemented). The summary of research achievements is as follows: Conservation stage:-The calculation of urban green spaces' ecological benefits of 1). Production of biodiversity: surveying ten Japanese gardens by capturing species, placing IC recorders and infrared cameras, etc., and 2). Climate action: potential carbon sequestration by tree species has been calculated in six Sacred Forests.-2)Socio-cultural benefits of services provided by six sacred forests have been obtained. Transformation stage:-The mapping of the abandoned gray infrastructure, such as vacant houses, has been done using the information provided by household Kankosha company digital maps and their previous use and ownership research. To foster a green community and infrastructure, the Participatory Action Research (PAR) one-year plan has been formulated to be initiated from April 2024 to March 2025. The article "Urban sacred forests support human well-being through cultural ecosystem services" Authors: Alebel Melaku, Juan Pastor Ivars has been published in the Journal of Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainable Development 2024 by Emerald. The research achievements were widely disseminated overseas in the UNFCCC COP 28 (Dubai, EUA), ICOMOS 21st General Assembly (Sydney, Australia)) and Portland Japanese Garden (Portland, USA)

理由
Regarding the calculation of the ecological benefits of the production of biodiversity and carbon sequestration have progressed considerably, and Participatory Action Research at public associations plan re-activated once COVID-19 restrictions have been reduced.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Regarding the calculation of the ecological benefits of the production of biodiversity through environmental DNA analysis, 2024 will be the last year of data calculation in 5 traditional gardens, including Kenrokuen Garden. The participatory action-research (PAR) plan with the public association has been initiated this April 2024 and will be implemented until March 2025. The participatory action research aims to promote a green community through the following five actions: green growth, biodiversity monitoring, green space maintenance, community garden co-creation, and eco-tourism. These actions aim to explore solutions with citizens, increase awareness, empower participants, and enhance citizens' knowledge to respond flexibly and resiliently to economic and environmental changes.
