研究開始時の研究の概要 |
We previously found that malaria causes bone loss and alters bone marrow hematopoiesis. We recently found changes in bone marrow niches that governs hematopoiesis. This proposal aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that contribute to the alteration of bone marrow niches during malaria infection.

研究実績の概要 |
Stresses from infection and inflammation can alter or damage the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niches in the bone marrow. CXCL12-abundant reticular (CAR) cells surrounding the sinusoids are the major cellular component of perivascular HSC niches, that are in close contact with HSC and B cell progenitors to support HSC maintenance and lymphopoiesis. We found that malaria infection enhances hematopoiesis but causes an imbalance in the differentiation potential of multipotent progenitor cells. We found that malaria alters CAR cell population and suppresses B lymphopoiesis, as well as the retention of long-lived plasma cells in the bone marrow. This study suggests that malaria has an impact on B cell immunity.
