研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research is to understand the mediating effects of hand sensation on the association between hand motor function and cognitive performance both in healthy older adults and in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), including the clinical significance of a hand sensorimotor intervention in MCI older adults and its cost-effectiveness. The results of this study will provide new insights into aging research for the early screening of decline in cognitive function in older adults and for preventing the progression from MCI to later stages in rehabilitation settings.

研究実績の概要 |
In collaboration with my co-researchers, a health examination was conducted in 2023 for data collection of the hand and cognitive functions of healthy older adults. A lifestyle questionnaire was also distributed beforehand to all participants so that they could answer comfortably at their homes. On the other hand, due to the non-response of older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the clinical data could not be collected at St. Luke's International hospital as planned. Currently, the data with healthy older adults are under analysis, and the results are planned to be presented at an academic conference. This study aims to understand the prevalence of decline in hand sensorimotor function and whether decline in hand sensation mediates the association between hand dexterity and executive functioning in older adults. Understanding this mechanism will help the early diagnosis of cognitive impairment among older adults and understand whether decline in hand sensorimotor function can be considered a risk factor for early cognitive decline in older adults.

理由
Data collection of both healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment was scheduled to be completed in the fiscal year 2023; however, the clinical data was not collected due to non-response from potential participants. Thanks to the collaboration of my co-researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute for Geriatrics and Gerontology, the clinical data will be collected this year from a larger research project that will be conducted by our research institute in Kawasaki city. In the meantime, statistical analysis of the data collected from healthy older adults are being currently performed, and the results are planned to presented this fiscal year.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This fiscal year, the clinical data for cross-sectional analysis will be collected from a larger project conducted by our research institute in Kawasaki-city. Also, the intervention study with older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) will be implemented this fiscal year from October 2024 to March 2025. To confirm the suitability of the items for the upcoming intervention study, meetings with occupational therapists are being conducted. Also, considering that data of the healthy older adults are already available, their results are planned to be presented at a national academic conference, and when the clinical data is available, the findings of the comparative study (MCI and healthy older adults) will be presented at an international conference and submitted to a prestigious scientific journal for publication.
