Three samples of skutterudite doped with Sn: Smy(FexNi1-x)4Sb11.5Sn0.5 were prepared with X= 0.45 (n-type semiconductor); X = 0.55 (n-p crossover semiconductor); X = 0.65 (p-type semiconductor). After grinding, sieving, and densification with SPS (500 ℃ for 7 minutes) the samples were sent to a collaborator at NIMS Tsukuba for the transport and thermoelectric characterization. Best samples presented an absolute value of Seebeck coefficient of 100 microV/K, a room temperature thermal conductivity of 1 W/m K, an electrical conductivity of 1000 S/cm and a max power factor of 1700 microW/m K^2 at 550K. These results will be summarized and submitted to an international peer-reviewed journal at the earliest convenience. The double filled skutterudites of composition (Sm,Nd)y(FexNi1-x)4Sb12 and (Sm,La)y(FexNi1-x)4Sb12 were prepared in collaboration with the research group at University of Genoa and will be subjected to structural investigation by XRD before the densification and thermoelectric characterization. The addition of carbon-based nanodefects to Smy(FexNi1-x)4Sb12 skutterudites in the attempt of reducing the thermal conductivity was accomplished and a series of samples with increasing content of carbon was sent to collaborators at TTI (Nagoya) for SPS densification and thermoelectric characterization. The fellow visited Dillard University (New Orleans, USA) for 1 month to prepare skutterudite thin films added with carbon nanoparticles

理由
The synthesis of carbon-added Smy(FexNi1-x)4Sb12 bulk skutterudites was unexpectedly difficult due to the high reactivity of nanocarbon particles. The custom made apparatus to measure the power factor in the laboratory is not working properly, so samples have to be sent to collaborators. At Dillard University due to time constraints it was just possible to calibrate the multi-target, multi-laser PLD system.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Future work will be focused to prepare the films of Smy(FexNi1-x)4Sb11.5Sn0.5 and of double-filled skutterudites using the SPS targets. In addition, bulk and thin-film modules of selected n- type and p-type skutterudites will be fabricated and their output power will be evaluated. The preparation of nanocomposite carbon-skutterudite thin films in collaboration with Dillard University will continue.
