研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research aims to design and synthesize stimuli-responsive porphyrin-polymer conjugates. These conjugates comprise a hydrophilic biocompatible polymer with a photoactive porphyrin unit. The physicochemical properties of these molecules will be studied. In particular, the possibility of their use as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents (i.e. singlet oxygen generators for cancer treatment). These molecules with a dual porphyrin-polymer nature are expected to be useful for various sensing (pH, anion, impurity) or imaging (MRI) applications.

研究実績の概要 |
The purpose of this project is the design/synthesis and physicochemical characterization of photostable stimuli-responsive porphyrin-polymer conjugates based on the connection of hydrophilic biocompatible/biodegradable polymer with photoactive porphyrin unit. In FY2022, synthetic methods were established. Various porphyrin conjugates with biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) were prepared. Basic characterization using NMR, UV-Vis, FTIR, DSC, SEM and TEM were performed. Detailed investigation of phase-separation properties of porphyrin-PNIPAM conjugates was undertaken. The system exhibits different structures below phase separation temperature ca. 32°C (i.e. 1D supramolecular polymer) and above (i.e. large globular structures). These structures are further tunable by pH. Also, highly porous functional materials (with surface area >3000 m2/g) were prepared by thermal treatment of suitable polymers.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
Further, the properties of obtained porphyrin-polymer conjugates will be investigated for their response to various external stimuli (pH, temperature, etc.). The thermodynamic model of their phase-separation behaviour will be developed. The porous functional materials obtained by thermal treatment of suitable polymers will be tested for catalytic, adsorption, sensing and energy storage applications.
