| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
Two of the most important commercial species belonging to the Mahogany family (Meliaceae) throughout Latin America, Big-leaf mahogany (S. macrophylla) and Spanish cedar (C. odorata), are CITES listed in Appendix II. Despite the listing, illegal extraction and trade continue to be a problem in sustainable management control and loss of genetic diversity. Therefore, the objective of the present proposal is to implement an International Joint Research Project in cooperation with the Peruvian counterpart to preserve the biological resources of endangered Mahogany species in the Amazon rainforest.

| 研究実績の概要 |
This research project aims to elucidate the genetic diversity of the main populations of the most important commercial species of the mahogany family in the Peruvian Amazon, the big-leafed mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) and cedro (Cedrela odorata L.), and to consider practical ex situ conservation techniques for resources necessary to develop effective management programs, and develop guidelines for genetic conservation of mahogany species.
Research achievements in the first year are as follows.
(1) In order to carry out this research project, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on scientific and technological cooperation was signed with the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP-Peru) and with the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios (UNAMAD-Peru).
(2) Field surveys and research meetings with overseas joint researchers were conducted to explore evaluation sites and target individuals and populations of mahogany species.

理由
Due to the fact that the first year of the project started in October and that there were problems with access to some research sites, a part of the originally planned activities were postponed until the following year.

In the next year, the following studies will be carried out.
(1) Select study sites and target individuals/populations and start collecting samples for genetic analysis and experimental materials for ex situ conservation.
(2) Start preliminary experiments on genetic analysis and ex situ conservation.
