研究概要

セレンは必須微量元素で、水銀化合物の毒性防御作用が期待される本研究では、自然界に存在する毒性の低いセレンであるセレノメチオニンがラット新生仔の発達期の脳で直接メチル水銀の毒性を防御することを世界で初めて報告した(Env Sci & Tech 2013)。歯クジラ類は、比較的高濃度の水銀を体内に蓄積するが、無機化能力が高く、無機化された水銀は、非活性で無毒なセレン化水銀に変化し筋細胞内に残留していることが示唆された。捕鯨の町の住民の血液試料中の水銀とセレン濃度は有意な正の相関を示し、セレンが住民における水銀の毒性の防御の役割を果たしている可能性が示唆された。
