研究開始時の研究の概要 |
The project aims to fill a gap in the literature of applied linguistics and English language learning concerning procedural monologues, such as those found in the how-to genre of YouTube videos. Specifically, key communicative functions and linguistic features common to the register of procedural monologues will be investigated by comparing videos of L1 speakers of English and Japanese undergraduates in order to support valid pedagogical approaches to teaching procedural discourse to learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Japan.

研究実績の概要 |
In FYI 2023, the first year of the project, 100 videos were selected, transcribed, and prepared for corpus-based analysis. Early findings were presented at the 2023 JALT Okinawa Summer Symposium and work commenced on writing a paper (for publication in 2024) focused on an identified salient linguistic feature of procedural monologues(wh-clefts). As the year progressed, qualitative coding of discourse functions was conducted, which proved useful to develop preliminary prototypes of learning materials.

理由
In the first year of the project, targets for data collection, transcription, preparation of files for corpus compilation, and preliminary analysis were accomplished on schedule.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
Current plans for FY2024 are primarily focused on further analysis of discourse functions in procedural monologues found on YouTube. If warranted, additional transcribed texts will be added to the current corpus to identify salient patterns of language that are associated with procedural monologues. Recruitment of university undergraduate participants for possible case studies will begin.
