研究開始時の研究の概要 |
In Japan a common understanding of repatriation is as national history. This project looks beyond ‘the nation’ to understand forced migration as a global phenomenon. Insights from this project have the potential to create new ways for Japanese repatriation museums to educate their visitors.

研究実績の概要 |
In AY 2023 the PI visited the Memorial Museum for Agricultural Emigrants to Manchuria (Manmo kaitaku heiwa kinenkan) to analyse the permanent display and to gather documents. During the visit the importance of the museum's oral history interviews to the formation of the overall message became apparent. The PI also reviewed materials collected on previous visits to the two other museums that constitute the Japanese section of the Kaken project (Maizuru Repatriation Memorial Museum (Maizuru hikiage kinenkan); Memorial Museum for Soldiers, Detainees in Siberia, and Postwar Repatriates (Heiwa tenji kinen shiryokan)). Of particular interest is the latter museum's collection of repatriate experiences that have been published periodically since the 2000s. This source will be important to compare with the oral history interviews at the Manmo Museum.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
In AY 2023 the PI was able to visit one of the museums included in the original research plan. The PI was not able to visit the other two museums this year but expects to be able to do so in AY 2024. The progress of the research was not significantly affected because the PI was able to use some of the materials collected on visits to the museums prior to the start of the research project.
|
今後の研究の推進方策 |
In AY 2024 the PI plans to make a research trip to the two museums in Germany (Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion and Reconciliation, Berlin; Museum Friedland, Friedland) that form the point of comparison with the Japanese museums. He may also visit other museums considered to have displays that are relevant to the topics of post-conflict population transfer and forced migration. The PI will make an initial presentation on some of the findings from this project at the 2024 AAS-in-Asia Conference. A follow-up research trip to the Manmo Museum to examine the extensive library holdings will also probably be necessary.
