研究開始時の研究の概要
In Japan a common understanding of repatriation is as national history. This project looks beyond ‘the nation’ to understand forced migration as a global phenomenon. Insights from this project have the potential to create new ways for Japanese repatriation museums to educate their visitors.

研究実績の概要
In AY 2024 the PI conducted research at the Documentation Centre for Displacement, Expulsion and Reconciliation (SFVV) in Berlin where he examined the display, used the archive and interviewed members of staff. This trip was an important part of the project's comparison of museums in Japan and Germany. In addition to SFVV, during the trip to Germany the PI also researched the display at the Museum of Military History in Dresden. In AY 2024 the PI examined displays concerning Japanese migration history at museums in Maizuru, Yokohama and Kobe. These visits will enable a broader perspective on the construction of museum displays in Japan. As stated in the summary for AY 2023, the PI presented on the project's findings at the 2024 AAS-in-Asia Conference. He also made one other presentation.

現在までの達成度
3: やや遅れている
理由
In AY 2024 the PI was unable to visit the second of the two museums (Museum Friedland, Germany) discussed in the Research Plan. The visit to this museum will be conducted in AY 2025 in order to examine the latest version of the display which was being renewed in 2024. The progress of the research was not significantly affected because the PI was able to use the extra time in Germany to view the display at another museum relevant to the Purpose of the Research.

今後の研究の推進方策
In AY 2025 the PI will conduct additional field research in Germany. He will examine the new display at Museum Friedland. He will also conduct follow-up research at SFVV, including additional interviews with relevant staff. In addition, he will examine the display at Borderland Museum Eichsfeld. Additional findings from the project will be presented at the 2025 AAS-in-Asia Conference in June, the 2025 Memory Studies Association Conference in July and the 2025 British Association of Japanese Studies Conference in September. He plans to publish research from the project in a chapter in an edited volume and in a peer-reviewed international journal article.
