研究開始時の研究の概要 |
To date, there is no detection system of wood traveling in rivers that works in all weather and in poor visibility conditions. Therefore, the present research tests electromagnetic systems to detect and measure the velocity and size of the wood debris, in order to develop new warning systems.

研究実績の概要 |
During the first year of the project, a set of (a) Laboratory experiments (Kobe University) were performed in a flume, in order to measure the velocity and the size of driftwood using electromagnetic methods. The radar-based calculations were compared to the velocimetry, and one Msc student has been working on the topic for her research project. The laboratory experiments have been complemented with field experiments at the Hodaka Research Station in Gifu Prefecture (Kyoto University), in order to test the possibilities of the method in a "real life" environment. During these experiments, the data processing has revealed that the sediment concentration of water in-flow was modifying the radar signal velocity, therefore further experiments and numerical simulations will be performed this year (second year) to clarify the relation between sediment concentration and the radar data.
For this purpose, the second year research will include (1) Further research at the flume of Gomez laboratory; (2) experiments at a different test watershed, in order to compare the results of different sediment chemistry; and (3) using the Maxwell's equations of electromagnetisms, the results will be simulated in order to better understand the wave propagation process and what can be expected for different watersheds.

2: おおむね順調に進展している
理由
The research is progressing smoothly, and the influence of the chemistry of sediments has been discovered to play a more important role than expected, and further work will be performed in this area as well.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
This year, (1) further laboratory experiments will be performed, (2) tests at another watershed will be performed (most probably the ERI of Tokyo University); (3) numerical simulation of the results will be performed.
