| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research analyses the intellectual conditions that have fostered principles and approaches toward
multidisciplinary research (MDR) within contemporary Japanese Southeast Asian studies. Through a
quantitative and qualitative approach, it examines Japanese researchers’ relations to knowledge
production trends, their own fields of research, and how these condition research initiatives. Ultimately,
it aims to clarify the nature of Japanese MDR and its intellectual contribution within global Southeast
Asian Studies.

| 研究実績の概要 |
For the first stage of the project in 2023-24, the team members conducted a review of the field of area studies research projects in Japan, Western Europe and the U.S. (Lopez, Fujieda, Kono).
For the second stage of this project, team members created a database of all research projects funded by the Japanese government from the Grants-for-Aid Japanese research database (Lopez, Fujieda). This database is a unique collection of 10870 research project conducted within Southeast Asian countries between 1964-2023. At present the database is being organised to create a visual representation of academic researchers within and between their respective research communities by focusing on the relationships between Principal Investigators and recipients.
For the third stage of this project, the principal researcher has conducted an initial analysis of the frequency of projects conducted by researchers while actively employed. This has been done to ascertain which researchers are of interest to interview in 2024. A questionnaire has been created to conduct qualitative interviews with Japan based researchers. Both Lopez and Fujieda have commenced interviews with respondents of interest based on the analysis of the database.

Progress is slightly delayed due to complications in filtering the database and extracting the frequency of projects to identify researchers to interview domestically.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
In 2024 the following will be conducted. Firstly, both Lopez and Fujieda will conduct ongoing face to face interviews with academic respondents of interest within Japan. Secondly, we will produce a social network analysis of the database data to evaluate our analysis and produce a map of the research ecology within research conducted in Southeast Asia.
