研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research aims to measure the social interactions between lower- and higher-income class and how it might affect the lower-incomes’ housing satisfaction. The focus will be revolving around the influence of public amenities in a different neighborhood setting (slums and public housing).

研究実績の概要 |
For the fiscal year of 2023, the PI has done the main survey on the public housing residents (PHR) regarding their housing satisfaction and their social interaction. The analysis done in that year was focused on examining how public amenities affect the housing satisfaction and social interaction especially with higher income individuals (HIC).
Up to this point, the research found that PHR were mainly focused their social interaction mainly among themselves. Only small portion of the PHR that actually have interacted with HIC outside public housing (non-resident). In addition, some of PHR had never have any interaction with the HIC inside public housing (their own neighbors).
Public amenities such as public cafe, park, and especially traditional market helped brings together PHR and HIC. However, the social interactions between them were mostly driven by the economic needs of the PHR (e.g. PHR selling goods to HIC), rather than a natural encounters in public amenities. This reveals that the existence of traditional market around public housing is crucial for the social interaction.

理由
While most of the data (Public Housing Residents / PHR) were already collected in the fiscal year of 2023, there was some issues when collecting the data from the residents of slum settlements (SS).
Acquiring legal permission was complicated compared to the PHR. PHR was managed by local governments, which made the survey permission acquisition process easy and clear. SS on the other hand managed by non-governmental neighborhood leaders, and each of them had different understanding about the process and also different sets of regulations. Due to that, the sample collection was mainly focused on the PHR
A total of 804 samples of PHR was already collected. The research has also shared several findings through multiple seminars and academic conference, and currently in the process of publishing two articles.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
There are two steps that are required for the completion of the project.
First, the data collection for the residents of slum settlements (SS). Due to several obstacle on data collection, PI will try different approach on investigating the dynamics between SS and higher income individuals (HIC). The first option would be qualititative data (in-depth interview) which requires less samples. The second option would be spatial data and field observation.
Second, the completion of data analysis. The social interaction part of the research has been analyzed during the first year of the project. The second year of the project will focus on analyzing its influences on the housing satisfaction of the PHR and hopefully, the SS as well.
