研究開始時の研究の概要 |
I will the diversity of symbioses in microbial eukaryotes. I will use advanced single-cell sequencing and microscopy methods to predict the symbiont function(s), uncover their cellular localization, and understand their evolution. The results of the project will clarify the current symbiosis theory and propose new fundamental mechanisms for how symbioses evolve.

研究実績の概要 |
Our major published achievements so far include work on 7 (6 symbiont-derived) genomes in a single cryptomonad cell (George et al., Cur Biol 2023) and a study showing that previously reported symbionts in Symbiomonas were misidentified giant viruses (Cho et al., PLoS Genetics, 2024).

理由
Due to the solid preparation status with many samples already collected or cultured in my group, the initial plan to screen a diversity of protists for symbionts is largely finished.

今後の研究の推進方策 |
In the FY2024, we will proceed with a detailed characterization of the selected systems. So far, we published our work on 2 species (Cryptomonas and Symbiomonas). A manuscript on 7 species of large benthic foraminifera is currently drafted and additional manuscripts on >5 systems are in preparation. We will thus reach the number of ~10 characterized systems as proposed in the application.
