| 研究開始時の研究の概要 |
This research juxtaposes language repertoire and cognitive functions in aging adults to find out how these two domains relate to each other. It builds on a 1-year clinical investigation and on an interdisciplinary examination of concepts such as multilingualism, brain plasticity, epigenetics, etc.

| 研究実績の概要 |
This research investigates the relationship between language repertoire and age-related cognitive decline, with a focus on multilingual elderly individuals. Building on previous progress, we organized two interdisciplinary symposia: one in June 2024 at Nagasaki University titled “Brain Function Plasticity in Multilingual Speakers and Its Benefits,” and another in January 2025 at Kyoto Women’s University under the theme “Language Repertoire and Mental Health.” These events featured presentations by researchers from linguistics, psychiatry, and cognitive science, including a paper on the neurostructural and neurosynaptic foundations of an alternative approach to language. Early findings indicate a potential link between ample language repertoire and enhanced cognitive reserve, supporting our central hypothesis. The theoretical groundwork has been further consolidated, and preparations for large-scale comparative analysis have begun. Our first international presentation will be delivered in October 2025 at the “Aging & Social Change” conference in Sweden, under the title “Language Repertoire and Mental Health in the Elderly - Neurostructural and Neurosynaptic Substrata of an Alternative Approach to Language.” These developments set the stage for application-oriented intervention research on dementia prevention.

理由
The project continues to progress rather smoothly and in accordance with the initial research plan. The theoretical framework has been solidified, and two interdisciplinary symposia have been successfully conducted, facilitating valuable academic exchange. Preliminary observations support the core hypothesis, and preparations for broader empirical investigation are underway. No major obstacles have been encountered so far.

| 今後の研究の推進方策 |
In this academic year, we plan to hold the final two symposia of the project - one in summer and the concluding one in winter - where we will systematize the research results and assess their broader implications. In October, selected findings will be presented at the “Aging & Social Change: Fifteenth Interdisciplinary Conference” in Sweden under the title “Language Repertoire and Mental Health in the Elderly - Neurostructural and Neurosynaptic Substrata of an Alternative Approach to Language.” In parallel, we will begin drafting a comprehensive research paper aimed at peer-reviewed publication and continue developing the comparative statistical framework drawing on people with limited language repertoire vs. those with ample language repertoire. Moreover, collaboration with international researchers, especially from neuropsychiatry and language sciences, will be intensified to validate cross-contextual applicability. No major changes to the research plan are currently anticipated, and the project is on track to move into its final phase, focused on practical applicability and theoretical synthesis.
